New requirements for Android OEMs

Google has recently released a new version of their Compatibility Definition Document that dictates how OEM modifies the operating system to their liking. However, Google has tightened their grip on the notification shade to create consistency among all Android devices. An excerpt from CDD detailing what Android Police went over in their article.

Handheld device implementations MUST support the behaviors of updating, removing, replying to, and bundling notifications as described in this section.

Also, handheld device implementations MUST provide:

  • The ability to control notifications directly in the notification shade.
  • The visual affordance to trigger the control panel in the notification shade.
  • The ability to BLOCK, MUTE and RESET notification preference from a package, both in the inline control panel as well as in the settings app.

We shall see how devices in the near future will be modified according to the new requirements. However, I believe some OEMs like Samsung for example will need to rethink their Grace UI to accommodate this. Due to the experience with the Motorola X Pure Edition (2015) and their near stock Android interface. I quite did enjoy using their easier to use notification shade compared to Samsung’s hassle of a UI.
