Samsung releases details of Note 7 battery fault

Just as they promised, Samsung released a report on the Note 7’s battery failures cause. Samsung sold 3 million devices and have so far received 96% back in the recall. Through their website, Samsung demonstrates they have learned the cause and the lessons learned to prevent an incident from happening again. They go into detail on what actions they have taken with full responsibility and avoiding further negative public relations. As well as how they conducted their investigation of the matter. Concluding with what they promise is going to be a brighter future for the company.

  • Early reports of Samsung Note 7 devices catching fire was late August to September, with recalls by providing new devices of alternative batteries from their second manufacturer. Unfortunately, a second recall was set in motion with all inventories sold and on shelves to be sent back to Samsung. Both manufacturers had issues with batteries.
  • Samsung set up a task force to test out numerous batteries and devices as well as hire three different organizations to find their own conclusions. Going from the first step of device manufacturing to the end of completed assembly to find out what steps caused them to miss these indications. With all said and done, they still wound up to the battery as the primary cause.
  • Samsung found that their first manufacturer’s batteries contained a fault at the top right tip of the battery. Causing an electrode deflection in the incorrect positioning of the negative electrode tip in the battery. On the second occasion, they found abnormal weld spots from the second manufacturer’s batteries that created an internal short circuit.
  • To avoid further devices from creating any problems in the future. Samsung states that an 8-point battery safety check will be placed. Beginning from the component to implementation of a complete device. Their company safety standards have been revised to improve on such failures. As well as have a team dedicated to advise Samsung on safety battery creation and assembly.
  • Further detail into the 8-point battery safety check includes durability testing, visual inspection, x-ray testing, charge and discharge testing, TVOC testing, disassembling testing, accelerated use testing, and OCV testing.

Based on these findings, we’re excited to see what the future will hold for future Samsung devices. The Samsung S8 may be bring possibly superior capability for the battery as Samsung dedicates itself from further humiliation from explosive batteries. Only time will tell.
