After Unity’s licensing changes were brought to Improbable’s attention. Improbable is the company that developed SpatialOS which uses cloud-based server migration for multiplayer gaming. It allows a higher capacity of worlds and players to play in one server by dividing the workload into smaller ones. Development using the cloud-based software in Unity games were halted. Some Unity games were already live and others were in development using the software in mind. Fortunately, Epic Games and Improbably are jointly working together to help the developer teams affected. Epic Games is the Fortnite company behind the popular Unreal Engine 4 that many games in the industry uses. Both companies have committed in assisting developers and establishing a US $25 million fund. They want to push the affected developers to seek open-source or more liberal game engines, services and ecosystems. We wish best of luck to those affected in the games industry and hopefully Unity can backtrack on this current issue.
