The Expanse ‘Strange Dogs’ Review

Released this week, episode 1 (57th) of The Expanse’s season 6 premiered titled ‘Strange Dogs.’ We follow the growing threat of the Free Navy led by Marco Inaros and learn a bit more of what happened in the previous season. Several defecting Martian Navy having crossed through the ring onto a system containing the planet Laconia using the stolen proto-molecule to aid in their colonization of it. Back to our system, Holden and the crew are in heated combat against a lone Free Navy ship near several asteroids. After the fight, they send in a drone to investigate why the lone ship was out there as well as repair their ship’s damage. We also see the perspective of the Free Navy with Marco and Filip Inaros as they’re present on Ceres Station, gaining loyalty and logistics in their cause among the belter population. Elsewhere, Drummer and her crew are on the run in a prolonged fight of their own against Inaros’ forces. Using belter tactics that goes nearly wrong as a crew member of hers struggles under pressure. They succeed in getting away. Back on Earth, Avasarala and Draper continue to survey the planet’s damage and slow recovery from asteroid impacts having gained the ability to avoid further damage. We then learn from Holden’s investigations on the asteroid which contains an attached engine programmed only to run from a signal that a spotter ship within the system can send. The Rocinante sends the intel to Avasarala as new hope slowly resurge amongst our heroes. ‘Strange Dogs’ is the new season premiere episode in this tense realistic sci-fi series. It opens up by slowly beginning to tie loose ends as the season’s arc will continue to progress in the following episode. The Rocinante, United Nations, Mars and Belter allies fight against the growing dogmatic Free Navy whose aggressive guerilla tactics pose a serious threat to humanity.

It earns a 4 out of 5.
