Attack On Titan ‘Memories Of The Future’ Review

Released this week, episode 79 of Attack on Titan premiered title ‘Memories of the Future.’ We return to the Paths where Eren and Zeke go through memories of Grisha Jaeger, their father. Zeke tries to show points of indoctrination of Grisha’s ideals unto young Eren. Starting when he was a young infant, but Eren isn’t affected by such examples. Zeke also shows moments in which Grisha starts to take opportunities to get closer to the royal family within Paradis and find them. With some memories hinting a reveal, mentioned in a bit. In one memory, Grisha is asleep in his office where he cries out for Zeke in regret. He awakens from his sleep and apparently sees the older Zeke who is stands in front of him in his office, but Zeke believes that he’s hallucinating. Moving to the memory in which Eren defends Mikasa after her parents are killed, it’s pointed out that Eren has always been seeking his freedom even if it means killing. Zeke notices that they are polar opposites being descendants of their father, but Zeke wants to push Eren to see the light in his argument. The episode then heads into Grisha’s encounter the day the wall fell and himself encountering the Reiss family in the cave. Pleading for their help to save Shinganshina from the titan attack. Unfortunately, Frieda is affected by the vow of renouncing war and goes off stating that Eldians must perish for their historical sins. Grisha relents in attacking the family. Eren is appalled watching the memory again now older and having experienced more hardships. He manages to talk to Grisha from the Paths, reminding him of Grisha’s mission and he must kill the family. Afterwards, Grisha is completely delirious in having pulled the act of killing the Reiss family and asking if Eren was right all along. Despite, the Attack Titan having the ability to see the future. Grisha was unable to see what Eren will go through but once he killed the Reiss family. He has absolute regret. Zeke stands in front of Grisha and is seen by him. Asking Zeke for forgiveness, telling him that at this point Eren is in control of the future and he must be stopped.

‘Memories of the Future’ is a great episode that shows us the different perspectives of Zeke and Eren. One wanting to eliminate the threat of Eldians and the other desiring freedom for them. Going through the memories through the eyes of Grisha Jaeger, reliving moments that we have seen before. Now in a different way as the things in the real world is in chaos. With much bigger stakes and once again, perspective. Who is truly right in this argument? Does Eren have justification to unleash the Rumbling to save Eldians? Zeke appears to be in the right with the royal family and even Grisha desiring no more bloodshed.

It earns a 4 out of 5.
