Attack On Titan ‘Traitor’ Review

Released this week, episode 85 of Attack on Titan premiered titled ‘Traitor.’

The episode begins with the big debate for our Scouts, to kill their brethren despite those same ones had tried to imprison them in order to get to the airship. Annie and Reiner are up to kill more Jaegerists but Magath shocks everyone. After breaking Yelena’s arm out of anger, he apologizes to the Scouts and the Warriors for what he thought was justification for Marley’s treatment of both sides. Armin makes his decision with a desire not to leave with clean hands, the others join in. Yet their sentiment is to avoid further Eldian bloodshed as possible. Transitioning to the port, Floch has killed several Azumabito members as well as threatening more if Kiyomi doesn’t join Eldian’s cause. Outside, Conny and Armin arrive in a ruse to have the airship prepped to pursue the Cart and Armored Titan that supposedly escape back to Marley. The two approach the airship which is rigged to blow up, Samuel and Daz are guarding it and utterly nervous of their presence. Samuel tells Conny and Armin talks about them being traitors to Eldia which to him sounds ridiculous if they’re now victorious thanks to Eren’s Rumble. Conny and Armin play it cool but back to the building holding Floch and the Azumabito. Floch had tried to kill more but Kiyomi grapples his arm as Mikasa jumps into the room taking out two Jaegerist guards. Floch uses his ODM gear to escape the building and yells out to the rest of the Jaegerists that Mikasa, Armin and Conny are traitors. Nearby, Reiner and Annie briefly use their ODMs to get close and turn into Titans. Mikasa leads the Azumabito to Hange and Magath down to the basement while outside turns into pure chaos. In tears Samuel fires several shots at Armin to temporarily handicap him and points the gun at Conny. Daz prepares the detonator that was previously disabled but Armin regains energy to get close to him. Conny rushes at Samuel and the two struggle and plea. However, Conny overcomes their former close bonds and fires several shots at both Daz and Samuel.

Traitor is a heartbreaking episode as Mikasa, Armin, Conny and Jean must accept reality in the obstacle of getting to the airship. Having to kill their former comrades who also hesitate to kill them as Floch calls the four traitors. It also should be said that a brief moment outside the battle as a recovering Levi is propped up to see the fight. No words said but his solemn face says it all. Another thing is the brief appearance of Reiner and Annie using ODM gear again, in a sad and desperate circumstances. Overall, it appears the battle isn’t going well for the Jaegerists as several are killed and the detonator of the airship has been disabled. Now the question is making sure the Azumabito engineers survive as they’re escorted to the airship and prepare it in time. They have to reach Eren’s Founding Titan after all.

It earns a 4 out of 5.
